The first thing to match is the cue. A 3/4 split needs a longer case than a centre-jointed two-piece, and a one-piece needs a full-length sleeve, so the format is what narrows the choice before anything else. After that it is hard against soft. A hard case gives complete protection — the cue is held in a rigid shell that takes knocks, car boots and being stacked under other things. A soft sleeve is lighter, slimmer and quicker to use, which suits a cue carried a short distance to a regular venue.
